World’s cleverest dog dies after mastering over 1,000 words and basic grammar

Chaser even managed to master basic grammar during an astonishing life that revolutionised our understanding of animal intelligence.

The black and white dog who passed away at aged 15 was raised by John W Pilley, a professor emeritus of psychology at Wofford College in South Carolina, who had spent years researching animal learning and language. Prof Pilley decided to investigate further after being told by farmers that their Border Collies could understand the names of sheep.  Together, Chaser and Prof Pilley got to work ‘studying’ for between four and five hours a day.
