Why Vegan Entrepreneur Miyoko Schinner Is Suing California’s Ag Department

I recently sat down in Manhattan with vegan entrepreneur Miyoko Schinner, the CEO and founder of Petaluma, Calif.-based Miyoko’s Creamery, which basically invented the category of artisanal, plant-based dairy cheese and butter over its five years in business.

But it wasn’t long after our chat that the Animal Legal Defense Fund filed a lawsuit on behalf of Miyoko’s Creamery against the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). The complaint alleges that the agency violated the company’s First Amendment rights by ordering it in a December 2019 letter to remove all references to dairy, butter and being hormone free, lactose-free and cruelty-free from its vegan butter label — as well delete a picture of a woman hugging a cow from its website.
