In 2018, the UK overtook Germany as the world leader, dominating new vegan product development, Mintel reports.

As many as one in six (16%) of food products launched in the UK in 2018 had a vegan/no animal ingredients claim, doubling from just 8% in 2015.

Accelerating demand for plant-based foods has been driven by the rising number of vegans, a sharp rise in UK meat-free consumption, and programs like Veganuary which encourages people to try veganism for the month of January.

The number of vegans in the UK has surged by 700% in the past two years and now exceeds three-and-a-half million or 7% of the population according to research by comparethemarket.com. with vegetarians comprising an additional 14% of the population.

A number of high-profile celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ellie Goulding, who advocate veganism is undoubtedly partly to thank for the diet’s shift from a more esoteric subculture into the mainstream.

In addition to the growing vegan population, 34% of British people are choosing to reduce their meat consumption in the six months to July 2018 - either for health, ethical or to reduce their carbon footprint.

The German market is now seen as "mature and saturated" with fewer new vegan product developments which fell from 15% in 2017 to 13% in 2018. For Europe as a whole, about one in ten (9%) food products launched in 2018 were vegan, including no animal ingredients.
