Plant-Based Meat Maker Cheers Labeling Win in Mississippi

Activism has been a goal since the beginning, and activism is what drove Dan Staachmann, founder of Upton's Naturals, to become a plaintiff earlier this summer in a lawsuit challenging a new law in Mississippi that seeks to ban plant-based meat alternative companies from using words like “burger,” “bacon” and other meat-related terms on their packaging.

The company’s legal challenge bore fruit last week with the release of a proposed regulation by the state’s Agriculture Department. The measure sets out labeling standards that, if made permanent, would allow plant-based companies to continue using meaty terms on their products.
