New Outbreaks In Fruit And Vegetable Operations Threaten Farm Workers And Food Supply

In Two Rivers, Wisconsin, Kelly Wilfert has reached the point in the season when she and her family begin bringing on field workers to help with the strawberry harvest. But four weeks ago, she learned two of her usual workers had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Outbreaks have been reported in fruit and vegetable packing facilities in California and New York. Fresh fruit and vegetable production is ramping up for the year in many places.

But as more farm workers hit the fields and packing facilities, the industry risks the health of its workers, and the food supply chains those workers support, if widespread protective measures are not put into place.
