Mad cow disease found in Britain for first time in 3 years

Mad cow disease has been diagnosed in a cow in Scotland, the first case in Britain in three years. It is the first case of mad cow in Scotland in nine years. 

New public health control measures were implemented after the 1996 outbreak, including a food ban for animal tissues where the BSE prion proteins are concentrated. Cows are also fed a vegan diet to avoid infection, but experts say sometimes atypical BSE can occur sporadically.

VA: The most common mode of Mad Cow Disease or BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) infection is from feeding cows contaminated feed, particularly feed that contains animal proteins, such as, sheep or cows. But cows are plant eaters. They are herbivores. Their bodies are designed to eat plant material like grass or alfalfa hay. It is not natural for them to eat meat or other animal products particularly from other cows.
