Not to minimize racetrack deaths, but for every thoroughbred euthanized following a racing injury, dozens more are shipped to slaughterhouses in Canada or Mexico.

Horse racing is inherently risky. With thousand-pound animals moving through dense traffic on spindly legs at speeds up to 40 miles per hour, injuries are inevitable and frequently fatal.

There is no surviving the slaughterhouse, however. Much as the continuing carnage at Santa Anita has forced racing to confront its intrinsic dangers, shipping unwanted racehorses across U.S. borders to be killed for their meat is a common practice hard to rationalize and uncommonly hard to swallow.
